ONE of Warrington’s Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) has been chosen to lead an upcoming debate in the House of Commons.
Ryan Barnes, Warrington North member of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP), was elected at a regional meeting at Runcorn.
He will be the only young person from the North West to lead a debate.
The debate, set to take place on November 4, will be the third of its kind the UKYP has held in the House of Commons.
Ryan and his fellow representatives, Jamie Elkaleh who played an important role in organising the debate, and Tom Jennings, will give voice to the views of young people in Warrington.
Young people from the borough can also help decide the top five issues which will be debated at the UKYP House of Commons sitting.
Anyone aged 18 or under can choose what the Youth Parliament will debate by casting their vote in an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ukyp1 or by going to http://www.ukyp.org.uk/276414/289048.html
Alternatively they can contact IMPACT Warrington Youth Council at [email protected] in order to request a ballot paper. The ballot is open until October 16.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, the borough council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “I would like to congratulate Ryan, Tom and Jamie on their commitment to their work with the UK Youth Parliament and their significant role in the upcoming debate in the House of Commons. It is terrific to see their passion for politics and I wish them every success in the debate and in the future.”
The debate will be broadcasted live and young people all over the country can watch Members of UKYP debating youth issues in the House of Commons as a part of the citizenship curriculum.
