WARRINGTON’S Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex has been awarded Beacon Status by the Tennis Foundation in recognition of its consistently high quality, affordable community tennis programmes.
Lawn Tennis Association president Peter Bretherton will present a plaque to mark the occasion at the centre tomorrow (Wednesday).
It will be received by Cllr Kate Hannon (pictured), the borough council’s executive member for leisure, culture and community services.
Cllr Hannon said: “We are very proud to be recognised by the Tennis Foundation as a facility that offers the local community access to free tennis plus quality, affordable coaching for all ages and abilities.”
Children from local schools will also be in attendance on the day to display their tennis skills.
To become a “Beacon” site, facilities must offer access to inclusive tennis, plus quality, affordable coaching and regular competitions for all ages and abilities.
The courts at Birchwood have recently been refurbished to enable play all year round for all members of the community.
The council is encouraging people to try tennis, even if they’ve never picked up a racquet before so celebrate Beacon status, the complex will be running a free “taster” session on Sunday October 9, 10-11am for Under 10s and 11am-12pm for 11-14 year olds.
