A celebration of age

OLDER people in Warrington are being invited to step back in time to mark National Older People’s Day on September 30.
The day will be celebrated at two venues – The Gateway, on Sankey Street and at Warrington Baptist Church – between 10am and 3pm.
The Mayor, Cllr Mike Biggin, will launch the event, which is a 1950s themed celebration developed in partnership with various organisations including Warrington Museum and the Volunteer Centre, showcasing what life was like in Warrington more than 50 years ago.
A range of free activities and entertainment will be on offer all day across both venues including arts and crafts, gardening activities, make do and mend, line dancing, tai chi, live music, a film show and holistic therapies.
NHS Warrington’s Winter Warm campaign will be launched at the event and organisations will be on hand to offer advice on various topics including energy saving and support in the home.
Anyone attending will also be entitled to a winter health and well-being check, while people over 65 can get a free seasonal flu vaccine.
The day will also mark the important contribution older people have made to local life with the “Celebration of Older People” awards at the Baptist Church at 1.30pm.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s executive member for health and wellbeing and adult services, said: “The partners involved have organised exciting events across both venues that offer a great variety of activities. There really is something for everyone. I’m delighted the day will also pay special tribute to the important contribution older people make to the local community.”
The events have been jointly organised by the Older People’s Engagement Group, the Older People’s Forum, the council’s Neighbourhood and Cultural Services, Warrington Collegiate and NHS Warrington.

  1. OLDER people in Warrington are being invited to step back in time to mark National Older People’s Day on September 30.

Step back in time or step into confusion? Who has organised this event, someone old or someone young who doesn’t know much about life 50years ago?

What has line dancing, tai chi, and holistic therapies got to do with life 50 years ago? They were never heard of then. And the music – will that be modern rubbish or music of the 50’s?

  2. Ah Vesta Tai Chi I remember it well, it was first foreign food we ever got to try, you just had to watch out you didn’t over cook the noodles! You know, I may just pop down to this to see what it’s all about. Don’t class myself as old even though the mirror and my birth certificate might say otherwise. If Pat Wright organised it then I think it might be ok.

  3. Do older people really want to be reminded that they are old ? Only kidding as it sounds pretty good really although I’m sure that many who are ‘older’ are well aware of how to make do and mend 😉 A winter health check.. it that like what you get for cars and boilers ? Line dancing, Tai Chi, arts and crafts and the like sound great though and it may give some people something new to do and something fun during the winter months. Nothing wrong with a bit of something new and meeting others along the way so don’t knock it until you have tried it ? I may say I am older than I am as I fancy trying some of what’s on offer 😉 Is there a website link or list anywhere saying what is on and where or do people just have to ring up and ask / book? Many might not bother if they have to ring and makes it hard for people like me too pass on the details to my slightly ‘older’ relatives who I suspect may be really interested.
