Police crack down on gangs

POLICE have cracked down on anti-social behaviour by large gangs of youths at a popular Warrington playing field.
Officers from Warrington West Neighbourhood Policing Unit carried out the operations at Mary Ann Meadows, in Blackshaw Drive, Westbrook.
The clamp down came in response to concerns from local residents who claimed youths were causing problems in Mary Ann Meadows.
Inspector Dave Griffiths said: “Residents told us that youths were congregating in large groups in the area and drinking alcohol, dropping litter, causing a nuisance and generally acting in an anti-social manner.
“There is no doubt that this was having a significant impact on the quality of life of local people and so, in response to concerns, we launched the special operation.”
Patrols have been stepped up and officers have adopted a proactive approach by confiscating alcohol from young people and speaking to them before they have the opportunity to cause trouble.
Inspector Griffiths added: “We understand that often these youngsters are not seeking to cause problems for others and are simply trying to spend time with friends. But they have to realise the impact their behaviour has on others. We will not tolerate any sort of behaviour that has a negative effect on the quality of life of the local community.
“We will continue to work with representatives from partner agencies and the local community to address issues as they arise, but we need further assistance from members of the public.
“We can only deal with those issues we are aware of and I would urge residents in the area to continue reporting any incidents to us. This is helping us to build up a fuller picture of what is happening in the area and is helping us to work out long-term solutions to any problems.”
