MORE than 140 youngsters took part in a two day jamboree of science at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory, near Warrington.
Whether it was making and launching rockets or learning about light, there was something to capture everyone’s imagination, as children from the ages of 3-18 all got their hands on fascinating, educational science fun.
“It must be more exciting to work at Daresbury than at NASA, there’s always something going on and you discover so many new things!”
These were the words of 12-year-old Sam Tomlinson from Warrington, who had just spent his afternoon in the STARLab, learning about the solar system before going on to make his own moon buggy powered by balloons.
Other children were intrigued as they learned about the living conditions aboard a space rocket and made rocket testing devices using eggs, marshmallows and even spaghetti!
Some learned about the sun’s rays as they made their own bracelets using UV beads that change colour in the sun while others observed carbon dioxide being released from Alka-Seltzer tablets.
Cubs, Scouts, Brownies and Guides attended the sessions.
Laura Randle who took along a group from All Saints Guides in Warrington said: “It was a fun and informative day for young and old alike! We liked the hands on science, and hope to visit again next year.”
STFC’s Jane Binks, who organised the event, said: “It was fantastic to see so many budding young scientists intrigued by what they were learning and understanding how science affects absolutely every aspect of our lives. We are thrilled at the turnout and by how much everyone enjoyed themselves.”
