Care homes' future still uncertain?

NEW operators have still not been appointed to run 40 former Southern Cross care home across the North West – including three in Warrington – according to the GMB union.
The landlords who own the homes were due to appoint new operators by August 1 but missed the deadline, according to the union, which represents staff at the homes.
A GMB spokesman said: “Quite why the landlords, as the owners of the buildings, should be running the show is as mysterious as it is unacceptable.”
The three homes in Warrington are Callands, St Oswald’s and Three Bridges.
According to GMB, all three are owned by off-shore landlords.
The union claims Southern Cross informed them in July that all landlords were expected to make their decisions on future operators by August 1.
Homes would be transferred to new operators from September 30 to October 31 and when the process of transfer was complete, Southern Cross would be “wound down.”
The three homes in Warrington have more than 200 residents and a similar number of staff.
Joe Blott, executive director for neighbourhood and community services at Warrington Borough Council said: “I would like to reassure all residents and their families that the council is working closely with all three landlords at the three Southern Cross care homes in Warrington and actions are being made towards a positive solution.
” Ensuring high standards of care for the residents is of the utmost importance and we are continuing to closely monitor all Southern Cross homes to ensure quality of provision is maintained.”
The council says if residents or their families need more information about what is happening at their home, they should call 01925 444261 to speak to a member of staff in the adult social care team (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm).
