Healthy debate at Youth Parliament

WARRINGTON’S UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) representatives attended a national meeting of the group at Leeds University.
Tom Jennings (Warrington South) and Ryan Barnes (Warrington North), together with Jamie Elkaleh represented the borough at the 11th annual meeting of UKYP members.
They submitted three proposals to the national Youth Parliament manifesto – relating to climate change and youth provision – and all were passed with overwhelming “yes” votes.
Tom (pictured) said: “It was a great experience. There was lot of healthy debate going on and we got the chance to work on our public speaking skills as well as speaking to MPs about the issues that are important to us.”
Ryan said: “Members of the Youth Parliament from the North West region are always really proactive and it’s great to be among a group of young people who are so vocal about what they believe in.”
There was also time for some fun with a variety performance and a workshop teaching trade union songs.
There are about 300 members of UKYP nationally who meet for networking, workshops and debates. They also get the chance to question guest speakers who this year included Tim Loughton MP, Rt Hon John Bercow MP and Natascha Engel MP.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, Warrington Borough Council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “Warrington’s MYPs are extremely passionate about their community and the issues that affect their peers. I would like to thank them for being a voice for Warrington’s young people once again.”

  1. They are only passionate about one thing, Cllr Froggatt – and that's themselves. They don't see the wider community because they say we don't understand them.

  2. @Keepwatching, do you mean ‘themselves’ as in ourselves? or ‘themselves’ as in passionate about young people only?

P.S, thanks for the article John, and Gary for Publishing 😉
