Chippy wants to serve breakfasts

NEARBY residents are opposing a Warrington fish and chip shop’s bid to open from 8am to serve breakfasts.
The Big Blue, in Knutsford Road, Grappenhall would not be selling any food traditionally associated with a fish and shop until its existing opening time of 11.30am.
Early morning customers would be able to buy hot sandwiches, hot drinks, coffee, tea, bacon and sausage butties, etc.
But nearby residents, backed by Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council and borough councillor Elaine Welborn, are objecting to the changes proposed.
They say it could lead to early morning traffic and parking problems, noise and smells.
The Big Blue opened about 12 months ago but its opening hours were restricted to 11.30am to 10.30pm . It now wishes to open from 8.30am any day of the week.
Cllr Welborn says early morning opening would increase local traffic and clash with parents taking children to the nearby Bradshaw Primary School at an already hazardous time.
She was also concerned about early opening on a Sunday morning.
Planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved.
They say the earlier opening times will not significantly impact on the living conditions in the area. They say homes are far enough away not to be affected by smells or noise.

  1. I am sure a shop selling bacon butties will be very popular with kids on their way to school, I wish I had had one.

If Councillor Welborn is concerned about this ” already hazardous time” then she should be doing something about it, perhaps she should even be pleased that the chippy owners have brought it to her attention.

  2. Well, we would want to create a nuisance in “posh” Grappenhall, would we? Coun Welborn want to get a life! These kind of outlets are a part of life today and are all over the Town. This type of opening goes a long way to helping small businesses stay in business. What a NIMBY attitude. Please let the buisness get on with what they do best.

  3. my elderly mother lives very close by this shop – the traffic around school times has to be seen to be believed. Cars are double parked on Bradshaw Lane, which is also a bus route. Other times of the day it is equally busy – the shop involved has a bookies on one side of it, and a hairdressers and a vets on the other side, with very little parking in front. Cars are constantly looking for somewhere to park. The residents of the 2 houses nearest the shop must be heartily sick of vehicles parking on what was once a grass verge in front of their houses and is now rutted and muddy in wet weather.

Silver Surfer – I’m afraid the days are long gone when I, and probably you, used to walk your children to school. The school involved is a Primary school – most children of that age need escorting to school, especially when they have to negotiate such busy roads.

It’s not a matter of smells or noise – it’s the extra traffic that will ensue if this goes ahead. Knutsford Road is heavily used by HGVs – this shop is on the junction of Bradshaw Lane and Knutsford Road, on the opposite corner to a Tesco Express. The scenario will be of HGV’s pulling over on Knutsford Road for their bacon butties, blocking the sightline of drivers trying to get out of Bradshaw Lane, and generally causing an even greater hazard.

In reply to Council Tax Payer – I can assure you this part of Grappenhall is not posh and it isn’t a case of NIMBYism!! One of these days there will be a nasty accident at this end of Bradshaw Lane – by allowing this planning application to go through it increases the risk of this happening even more.

  4. Got to agree with Council Tax payer on this one….. small businesses are struggling right now and anything which can help to pay the ever increasing gas, electric and council tax bills have to be allowed and applauded…..Green frog, do you realise that by inflicting restrictions on a businesses opening times, it is like telling your mother that she can’t come out of her house between 9:00am and 12:30pm because she will add to the chaos…..curfews shouldn’t be allowed!

  5. Council tax payer and Baz – we used to have a small shop in Warrington – until the supermarkets moved in…..another member of the family has a small specialist shop, so I do know how difficult it is to keep doing……That’s why I refuse to shop in Tesco and the like – I wonder how much you use your local small shops????

I hardly think my mother, who doesn’t drive, walking to the bus with her walking trolley, will add to the increased traffic that will undoubtedly result if this application is approved.

  6. I think Grappenhall is a lovely area, but I don’t see how this shop opening earlier would have a negative affect on that. Parents should make an effort to WALK their children to school, or at least part of the way instead of insisting on parking as close as possible then complaining that it’s too busy and there aren’t enough spaces.
