Labour following our lead – Lib Dems

THE new Labour administration controlling Warrington Borough Council is following the lead of the Liberal Democrat-Conservative alliance they ousted at the May elections.
This is the view of Liberal Democrat leader Ian Marks, (pictured) following a number of decisions taken by Labour over a range of policy areas.
Cllr Marks said he welcomed Labour’s policy – although he questioned why Labour had been critical of the proposals when they were in opposition.
He said: “In some of their election leaflets Labour accused us of wanting to site an incinerator in various places in the borough.
“This had the desired effect of causing unnecessary alarm amongst residents. This was nonsense and we categorically denied it in the spring.
“Labour now confirms that it will not be building an incinerator anywhere either!
“I am pleased they also think our plans for restructuring the council directorates are robust and appropriate.
“Until further notice they are also appear to be following our budget and have not progressed the proposals made at budget time for spending an extra £2.5m. One of our priorities was ‘closing the gap’ and they recognise that progress has been made in narrowing the differences between the better off and less well-off areas.
“At the last council meeting we put forward two motions – one on the destruction of planning records and one on the closure of the Council for Voluntary Service. “They agreed to our proposal for an independent inquiry on the planning records issue and to a review of the CVS closure.
“We welcome their decisions to follow our leadership and we will continue to act as a responsible opposition and put forward proposals which we believe are in the best interests of the residents of the town.”

  1. He is like an old record! The truth is that the CVS review was already happening and the independent inquiry was announced. That’s not following his lead – that’s doing what they should have done when they were in control! The CVS can’t have been too much of a surprise to Marks – after all, one of his boys was on the board! They are going backwards under Marks – maybe it’s time for the night of the long knives amongst their ranks!
