Canal cruisers' day of fun

MORE than 200 brightly-coloured boats gathered on the Bridgewater Canal for a weekend of fun.
Boats from all areas of the canal took part in the Federation of Bridgewater Cruising Club’s annual rally of boats.
Guests at the event, hosted by the Bridgewater Motor Boat Club, Runcorn, included the Mayors of Warrington Cllr Mike Biggin, and Halton, Cllr Keith Morley.
Event spokeswoman Hilary Foster said: “After 12 months in the planning the absence of summer weather did not stop everyone having fun as over 200 boats turned up at Runcorn.
“There was some bright spots when the rain stopped and outside events were able to take place, like the birds of prey doing a flying display and the dog show when all the dogs at the rally entered for their usual events like ‘Dog’s Fancy Dress and Best Six Legs.'”
For the sail past of boats the Mayor of Warrington and other guests sailed in the wide boat Ada on loan from the Canal Boat Adventure Project.
The rally also included a range of stalls, entertainment, and performances by a theatre group.
The Federation of Bridgewater Cruising Clubs comprises the six clubs based along the 40 mile stretch of the Bridgewater Canal.
Hilary said: “The holding of an annual rally when all these boaters meet together and renew friendships seems to be unique to the Bridgewater Canal.”
