Wolves land Wigan

WARRINGTON will have to overcome arch rivals and reigning Super League Champions Wigan Warriors if they are to complete a hat-trick of Challenge Cup triumphs.
In a match which would have graced the final the Wolves will start as slight favourites with home advantage in the outstanding tie of the quarter-finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup, having beaten the Warriors at the DW Stadium earlier this season.
ommenting on the draw Head of Coaching tony Smith said: “”It was always going to be tough whoever we got because basically it’s the top eight in Super League.
“It should be a cracking game between two teams who have had some success in the last year or so and both are playing strong this year.
“We’re pleased to be playing at home but it’s not life or death. It wouldn’t have mattered if we’d been drawn away. We’ve shown we can win away from home.”
The Wolves have won 12 successive Cup ties since they lost in the fifth round of the 2008 competition to St Helens – but this will be their toughest test.
Meanwhile last year’s runners-up Leeds will be away to Hull while St Helens, Cup winners three years in a row up to 2008, will be at home to Hull KR.
The other quarter-final, to be played on the weekend of July 23-24, is a West Yorkshire derby between Castleford and Huddersfield at the PROBIZ Coliseum.
The Wolves v Warriors tie is a repeat of the 1990 final which Wigan won 36-14 during their run of eight-consecutive Wembley victories.
