Police warning after cruel burglaries

POLICE have issued a warning to householders to be on their guard against distraction burglars following a series of offences.
Burglaries have been reported in a number of places this week, including Warrington, Runcorn and Tarporley.
The Tarporley offence was particularly cruel as the thief knocked on the door of an elderly woman and told her he had lost his puppy, which he thought was in her back garden.
She allowed him into the house – and he stole a significant amount of cash while she was distracted.
Detective Inspector Sharon Case said: “I urge residents to be vigilant in respect of this type of crime, as the methods the thieves use are becoming increasingly unusual and diverse.
“A lot of people are aware of those who may attempt to gain access to their homes by purporting to be officials from a utility company, or offering to carry out gardening work.
“However this method of distracting the victim by pretending to search for a pet is an unusual approach that encourages innocent homeowners to feel sympathy for the situation and fall prey to this type of burglary.”
DI Case said householders should contact police if they were at all suspicious about a caller at their home.
She said: “Any genuine caller to your house acting in an official capacity would be able to provide proof of their identity, which can be verified by calling the company and ensuring the caller is genuine.
“If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours, keep an eye on them to ensure they aren’t being targeted by the bogus callers.”
