Postal workers in 860-mile run

FIVE postal workers set off today to run 860 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise thousands of pounds for children’s charity CWU Humanitarian Aid.
Six runners in total, all from the Warrington and Crewe areas, make up the charity team attempting the epic challenge.
Mostly postmen, they will stop at Royal Mail delivery offices and mail centres along the route over six consecutive days.
The team will add a further 80 miles to the route to visit the Communication Workers Union annual conference in Bournemouth on Sunday (May 22).
Relying completely on donations and sponsorship, the runners, aged between 46 and 54 years old, will complete their mission with the help of two fully fuelled support vehicles sponsored by Royal Mail as well as vital logistical support from parent union branches.
Carl Webb, CWU’s North West Regional Secretary, said: “What these guys are doing is just amazing and inspirational. The thousands they will raise will be used to purchase items for destitute children in Eastern Europe, things that children in the rest of Europe take for granted like new shoes, clothing to keep them warm and dry, beds and blankets and basic toys like footballs and skipping ropes. Not much to ask for in the 21st century so I urge people to support them on their epic run.”
Dave Taylor, Challenge Organiser, said: “When I initially came up with the idea of the six of us running non-stop from John O’Groats to Lands End they thought I’d lost my senses, and to be honest that is still the prevalent view.
“What swayed the rest of the team to join me in cloud cuckoo land was the worthiness and the work of the fantastic charity that will benefit from the completion of the challenge. A big thank you must go to Royal Mail for loaning us the support vehicles and our union the CWU who have given us unbelievable support.”
The runners are Dave Taylor, 47, postman, Warrington, Ian Walker, 50, driver Warrington Mail Centre, Neil Cliffe, 50, Keith brown, 49, both postmen at Warrington and Simon Walker, 46, a postman at Crewe
The sixth runner is Ste Taylor and there are three drivers, Alec Pearson, Ian Young and Steve Ratcliffe and two support cyclists, Adam Taylor 17, son of Dave Taylor and Anthony Walker 20, son of Ian Walker.
