Neglected pond is transformed

VOLUNTEERS have helped transform a neglected Warrington pond and seen ducks and frogs return to the site.
The orchid pond at Whittle Brook Linear Park, Penketh, had been unmaintained for years.
Water company United Utilities reported it tended to be “dry as a bone” in the summer, and flooded in the winter.
The company funded an overhaul project to dig out the pond, line it to retain water more effectively, install a drain to prevent winter flooding and add hardy wetland plants.
Environmental charity Groundwork carried out the spadework, with the help of local residents and volunteers from Verve Place – a Warrington-based accommodation and training project for young people.
Steve Knowles, project manager, said: “Our engineers have been doing a lot of work in Penketh on a major sewer improvement scheme to prevent flooding. We try to support worthwhile community projects wherever we can.
“This scheme has restored the pond to its former glory, helping to lift the appearance of the park, and providing a great spot for quiet contemplation. We’re really pleased we could help.”
Sally Rogers, from Groundwork, said: “The pond is now in a much happier state. The improvements we have made require very little maintenance, so the site can be a haven for wildlife, and human visitors, for many years to come.”
