warrington-worldwide website’s proposed paywall from April 1 next year was as some of readers guessed, an April Fool!
But while there are no current plans to introduce a paywall – it is the way many websites are planning to go in the future to help cover running costs – and hasn’t been totally ruled out at warrington-worldwide at some stage in the future!
For those who didn’t log on in time to see the April Fool, see below.

warrington-worldwide website will be launching a paywall from April 1 next year as part of the continuing development of its daily news service.
The decision has been made following the paywall success of News International who say the number of readers paying for its digital Times and Sunday Times products has risen 60 per cent in the last four months.
The total now stands at 79,000 digital readers for both titles – up from 50,000 in October.
warrington-worldwide was launched in April 1999 and now has more than one million page impressions every month, with a growing readership of more than 5,000 unique visitors each day.
Managing Editor Gary Skentelbery said: “The website is becoming a victim of its own success and we are facing increased hosting and running costs.
“We have been providing a free news service for the people of Warrington for twelve years now but need to start recouping some of our costs.”
Readers who register for the new service now will get a special introductory offer of £1 a week. From April 1 next year when, the paywall is introduced the annual subscrition will be £99 plus VAT.
“We are giving our readers 12 months to get used to the idea that they will have to start subscribing for our news service.
“We will be providing lots of new features as part of an enhanced subscription service, including special reader offers and a new look fully interactive readers forum.”

  1. Ahh but is it a joke Rob…. a lot of online newspapers etc are doing this and WW charging for the service was mentioned on the forum a long time ago. £1 a week seems pretty fair for those who use it regularly but to be honest the £99 subscription would put a lot of people off. Remember the saying ‘testing the water’ and ‘never a truer word said in jest’ 🙂
