Youngsters urged grow up green

A CAMPAIGN to get people to wear their “eco-pride” on their sleeve has been launched in Warrington.
Households are being encouraged to be more eco-friendly and to help young people “Grow Up Green.”
Golden Square shopping centre is spearheading the campaign and is asking people to make one small change in April by turning down their thermostat by just one degree. Campaigners hope to make Warrington the North West’s greenest town in April.
Energy Saving Trust statistics show that by turning the heating down by just one degree people in a three-bedroom semi-detached home could save £50 a year.
Those pledging to make this change will be encouraged to wear a special “Growing Up Green” recycled badge, which will be given away to shoppers at the centre and available to order via facebook.
Centre marketing manager Ian Cox said: “Warrington is already doing a lot to improve its carbon footprint as a town. We hope that this campaign will help people take the next step in making our town more eco-friendly by making a commitment to making a change for the better in April.”
Growing Up Green workshops will run in the centre during half term from April 4 to 15 to help educate young people about being more environmentally responsible.
Events include planting and growing carrots, herbs and sunflowers. There will be opportunities for children to decorate special bags for life as well as some giveaways for Warrington families to get their own tree courtesy of The Mersey Forest.
Anyone interested can sign the pledge by visiting http://turnitdown.epetitions.net/ and join the ‘I’m Growing Up Green’ facebook group.
