WARRINGTON Wolves chairman Steven Broomhead – formerly chief executive of the North West Development Agency and Warrington Borough Council – has been named chairman of a new health board.
Professor Broomhead, (pictured) also formerly principal of Warrington Collegiate, will head up the new health and wellbeing board which was announced earlier this year.
Warrington is one of the first towns in the country to implement this local control over health services following recent government reforms giving GPs the responsibility for commissioning healthcare and councils a greater role in public health.
Once established, the board’s remit will include agreeing priorities to address health and social care needs and overseeing arrangements for the transfer of public health to the council.
It will include local councillors, GP consortium members, members of the public and patient involvement organisation Health Watch, plus directors of public health, adult social care and children and young people’s services, neighbourhood representatives and the voluntary sector.
Professor Broomhead currently teaches entrepreneurial education at Liverpool Hope University in addition to his responsibilities at Wolves.
He said: “I look forward to working closely in partnership with the council, GPs, health service providers, the voluntary sector and the private sector to ensure that we have a strong partnership to make certain the health service in Warrington is both patient focussed and relates to our wider health needs.”
Cllr Ian Marks, leader of Warrington Borough Council who chaired the interview panel said: “I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Steven to this board. He is a prominent figure in our community and I am confident there is no one better placed to champion the needs and interests of our residents.
“He brings with him a valuable range of skills and experience which will be of great benefit to us. He has shown a strong commitment to public service over many years and I look forward to working together with him in the vital task of improving the health of the people of Warrington.
Dr Andy Davies, chairman of Warrington Health Consortium said: “Steven Broomhead’s enthusiasm, skills and capacity for supporting new ways of thinking about the public sector brought huge improvements to the North West during his time at the NWDA. We are delighted to be harnessing that expertise for Warrington’s health and wellbeing board.”

  1. I cant get a bus on sunday on

I love the bit “he has shown a strong commitment to public service over the years………..” errr like the guy isn’t doing it for the 100 grand a year he’ll probably be paid! Another nice little earner; a whopping big tax payer funded salary for mr Broomhead

  2. I cant get a bus on sunday on

and also….. he teaches “entrepreneurial education “…..what entrepreneurial skills has he shown over the past few decades? All he has done is jump from one six figure, taxpayer funded salary to the next…….. I’d love to see his pension payoff when the time comes!

Prof Broomhead has shown just what you can do when you seize every opportunity that comes your way. Blessed with superb networking skills, a remarkable knack of being in the right place at the right time and unparalleled ability to sell (himself) he’d have made an incredible entrepreneur. Besides, it’s hardly his fault there were no other appropriately qualified individuals within reasonable travelling distance of all those jobs he’s landed.

  4. Is there nobody else in Warrington that could have taken this job! How many more tax payer funded jobs is this man going to get. I suppose this is another 2 day a month position for mega bucks! Ought the position to have been given to a Warringtonian?
