Laboratory tackles hospital bug

TACKLING hospital bug MRSA and looking at alternative fuels are just two areas of research being developed by companies based at Warrington’s Daresbury Laboratory.
In just one year, firms using a unique suite of flexible access laboratories operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at the laboratory have had a huge impact on high tech research regionally and nationally.
The Innovations Technology Access Centre (I-TAC) has also helped create 12 new jobs.
I-TACsupports early stage businesses, providing not only well-equipped laboratory space for proof of concept research or product development, but also access to STFC’s world leading expertise, and help with identifying funding opportunities.
There are 21 companies working across a range of sectors including biomedical and energy which are benefiting from I-TAC’s supportive environment.
Innovative technologies and products being developed at I-TAC have applications in anaerobic digestion, anti-microbial (specifically combating MRSA), alternative fuels, and photo-voltaics.
Anthony Cope, director of TopCat Research Ltd is the latest tenant to benefit. He said:”Bringing my business to I-TAC has enabled me to gain £50,000 from the NW Investment Fund to achieve proof of concept.
“We’re developing a pregnancy testing technology that will be used to help endangered animals – nothing like this exists at the moment.”
