College hits the numbers

A TEAM from Warrington’s Priestley College triumphed in the regional heat of a national business game held by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
The team beat off competition from 10 other local colleges to secure their place in the national final which takes place in Birmingham on June 30.
Liverpool College, who hosted the event, were named runner up at the event which was organised by the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants (LSCA).
Aimed at 16-18 year-olds, the Business Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) competition links schools, students and employers together in a bid to, not only to increase awareness of the career, but to develop employability skills in the future workforce.
Assuming the role of chartered accountants, the students had just two hours to analyse, discuss and decide on the next steps of fictional organisations before presenting their ideas to a panel of business professionals.
Peter Bann, who teaches accounting at Priestley College, said: “Accounting is not just about number crunching – it is about making effective decisions on the basis of the information available. The ICAEW business game really helped to bring this to life by using real life business scenarios which gave the students an important insight into the world of work. Winning the competition has given the students greater confidence and we look forward to competing in the national final in June.”
