Tribute to Pete Postlethwaite

WARRINGTON Friends of the Earth and Warrington Council have joined forces to put on a one-off free screening of one of Pete Postlethwaite’s last films, The Age of Stupid, on March 22 at 6pm at the Pyramid Arts Centre, Warrington.
The critically acclaimed film, released in 2009, places Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist in 2055, in a world devastated by climate change, looking back at missed opportunities and warning signs.
Pete, who was born in Warrington in 1946 and still has family here, was a hugely successful Oscar winning actor who had a career spanning over three decades and appeared in such blockbusters as The Usual Suspects and Brassed Off. Steven Spielberg named him “The best actor in the world.” He was also a passionate campaigner on climate change.
Dina Baird, coordinator of Warrington Friends of the Earth, said: “Inspired by Pete Postlethwaite’s own passion and actions on climate change, we felt it was a fitting tribute to put on a screening of his record-breaking film. The message is powerful and urges us towards action. Everyone should see this film.”
The event, introduced by Friends of the Earth’s Head of Activism, will also include stalls from local community groups.
People can reserve free tickets for the event by contacting the Council on 01925 442615 or email [email protected]
Spaces on the day are available on a first come first served basis.
Meanwhile one of the rooms at the Pyramid is to be named in memory of Pete and there are also plans for a willow sculpture in his memory to be made in Orford Park where he played as a boy..
