Council puts off 20mph decision

TOWN Hall chiefs at Warrington have put off a decision on a controversial proposal to introduce 20mph speed limits over a wide area of the borough.
Members of the borough council’s traffic committee decided to defer consideration of a report on the issue after some people who had objected or supported the proposals had not received letters sent to them informing them of the meeting.
Officers were recommending a permanent order be made restricting traffic speeds to 20mph in parts of Orford, Great Sankey and the town centre.
Six residents had objected – mainly on the grounds that the £25,000 cost of implementing the speed limit could not be justified and that the restriction would, in any case, be unenforceable.
The council also received four letters supporting the restriction – including one from the Warrington Cycle Campaign and one from the 20s Plenty for Us campaign.
Pilot schemes were operated last year during which it is claimed injury accidents reduced by 12 per cent and casualties reduced by eight per cent.
The Orford area trial showed an even more significant reduction in casualties, according to the council.
Objectors to the proposal say drivers ignore existing 30mph restrictions so are unlikely to take any notice of a 20mph limit.
The Warrington Cycle Campaign, by contrast, wants the council to “quickly roll out” 20mph limits on all residential roads across the borough.

  1. If there decision is anything like on the A56 at Walton, traffic will grind to a halt.

Recently a 50 mph speed limit was imposed from the Walton Arms to the new traffic lights at the Runcorn expressway. Half the time motorists fail to recognise that they have emerged from a 40 mph limit at Walton into a 50 mph and continue to drive all the way at 40 mph causing unecessary delays and inconvenience to motorists who wish to travel at the legal limit of 50 mph

  2. But i meant to add that the Police are always there to catch the speeding motorist

NEVER the one that drives without consideration to other Road users ,

Sec 3 of the Road traffic Act comes to mind. Jobsworths they are

  3. How much is it going to cost to replace all the signs that were sprayed over ?? (graffiti if a kid did it..but allowed by the council!) More meetings, more money wasted…complete joke!
