Dog owners told: Clean-up

15

DOG owners are being urged to clean up after their pets when visiting Warrington woodlands.
The Woodland Communities Project organises events to reconnect people with their environment and reverse anti-social behaviour. But its activities have been hampered by irresponsible dog owners.
Each month a Nature Detectives Club is organised in several woods in Warrington to provide activities for children. These have been “hampered” by the amount of dog waste on the ground.
Leader Mac Carding said: “We have been using the woods regularly since last autumn and have never before experienced the level of dog mess.
“It is such a shame because the children were really enjoying looking for green shoots and catkins, and building twig towers and nests, but we had to be so careful where they went to forage for twigs, leaves and moss.”
He said the next meeting on Sunday, March 6 would take place in a different area and made a plea to dog walkers to always carry a poop-scoop bag with them.
A series of clean-up events are being held on Saturday between 10am and 12 noon to help tidy the woodlands. Volunteers are being invited to join in.
Friends of Gorse Covert Mounds are organising a Litter Pick and Spring Clean and those wishing to take part should meet on the car park on Gorse Covert Road. Further details are available from Nigel Balding on 07960 736203 or email [email protected]
A second event is planned at Mary Anne Plantation and participants are invited to meet at the car park at Seven Woods Pub, Westbrook Road, Westbrook. Further details are available from David Parr 07970 484104, [email protected]
Organisers say those taking part will need gloves, warm, preferably waterproof, clothing, and sturdy boots. People are invited to join in even if they can only spare half an hour.

  1. why are some dog owners so inconsiderate to other walkers? I’m fed up to the back teeth of having to watch where I’m walking – whether it be on pavements, woodland or parks. Then – if I’ve not seen the offending mess (I’m visually impaired), having to clean it off my shoes….

While we’re on the subject – why is it that some dog owners allow their dogs to jump up, bark at you and generally annoy? I was told by one such owner, after his large dog had jumped up at me, frightening me, that if I didn’t like dogs I shouldn’t walk in the park!!! Am I not correct in the assumption that if off the lead in a public place, dogs should be under full control of their owner?

  2. The Council can only do so much – its down to the people to say pick that S*** up. If you see an owner leaving it and you know where they live report it to the council because I’m sure they will pay a visit and also put the person through court because thats what need.

  3. No they will not pay a visit , pay my way. It would be your word against theirs. I have never known anyone go to court for leaving dog mess. Thats a mighty fine world you live in.

  4. This is a more important issue than it first appears, it can destroy a towns image. Several years ago, on a return trip to the UK, in a bout of nostalgia, I took my American wife to Blackpool. We walked from the ‘Front’, to Stanley Park and it was a disgrace. There was so much dog crap on the sidewalk that we had to walk about a mile and a half in the roadway. Great mounds of the stuff less than a footstep apart. It did nothing for my wifes opinion of Blackpool and she loves the UK..

  5. Forget taking a leisurly walk along the Bridge Water Canal…. I only walked from Red Lane bridge near Walton Gardens to the London Bridge and it was disgusting. There was so much dog mess everywhere that you could even smell it. One big long poop… DISGUSTING. Service roads around here are just as bad as people just leave it thinking no one will notice them same with some of the grass verges. I pick up after my dog and now find myself even picking up after pathetic lazy owners too who decide to just leave it Grrrrrrr !

  6. Guess you’re like me – dependent on buses to get around? What I wish is that dogs weren’t allowed on the bus – unless a Guide/hearing dog of course. Another absolutely stinking pooch on bus today – to make it worse, it was sat on the seat next to it’s owner!!!!

  7. I do not own a pet but i can see numerous reasons why .. comfort , loyal , feeling safe , then there is the pets which also help like guide dogs or the hypo alert dogs who can smell when a diabetics blood sugar level is dangerousley low.

  8. I cant get a bus on sunday on

Well the people I know don’t poo on the footpath so I have to disagree there I’m afraid. Dogs are dirty stinking animals and in a lot of cases can be extremely dangerous; usually after the owners bleat “oohhh my dog wouldn’t hurt a fly”………..

  9. my dog is my little life saver, when I was made redundant at 59, and given him as a gift, he was and is my reason for getting up each day, so shut up.

  10. Nevber hear anybody complain about horses when they do their business on roads and pavements like they do where I live, horse riders never pick the mess up. There are bound to be comments about horse manure being good for garden

  11. For some reason horse manure isn’t as offensive as dog poo – and – usually being a much bigger ‘pile’ is easier to see and avoid treading in!

I’d have much rather accidentally pushed my grandchildren’s pram into horse dung than the dog poo I didn’t see when out with them the other week. What a job we had trying to get the stinking mess off the wheels before the pram could go into the car…..
