Top award for council's election team

WARRINGTON Borough Council’s electoral services team – at the centre of a row two years ago after complaints over the conduct of the borough and parish council elections – has won an award at the Association of Electoral Administrators’ annual conference.
The award is in recognition of services to the borough council and to electoral administration at a national level.
Warrington’s team was nominated because it withstood intense scrutiny as it turned its service around to provide high levels of professional standards.
The team delivered excellent elections projects throughout 2009 and 2010 and has delivered a quality annual canvass project to ensure that the register of electors is accurate.
Members of the team shared their experiences with other members of the AEA during conference sessions and this was of great benefit and insight to all members of the association.
Alison Hughes, electoral services manager at Warrington, said: “This was a team effort and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work. It is great to be recognised in this way.”
Two years ago, Warrington came under close scrutiny following complaints about the conduct of the borough and parish council elections.
This revealed a number of issues – including one of the wrong candidate being elected to Poulton-with-Fearnhead Parish Council, 188 people being disenfranchised, people not receiving poll cards and a parish council candidate who lost by only three votes being denied the chance to ask for a recount.
