MP sounds flood warning

HELEN Jones MP has warned that homes in Warrington are being put at risk of flooding after the government cut 93 per cent from a project to protect homes.
The Environment Agency was set to begin construction this year on the River Mersey Scheme but will now have to delay by at least a year after funding for 2011/12 was cut from £4 million to £250,000.
Ms Jones (pictured) said: “Homeowners in Warrington will rightly be shocked by the Government’s decision to slash the budget for this flood defence project. It is appalling that the government is saying to residents that their homes aren’t worth protecting.”
“The insurance industry has said the government’s cuts could increase premiums or make homes uninsurable.
“Building strong flood defences saves money in the long-run and yet again the government’s cuts are being shown to be misguided and dangerous.”
National capital spending on flooding by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is set to fall from £354 million in 2010-11 to £259 million in 2011-12.
