Domestic abuse: help for men

0

MEN who are being physically or verbally abused by someone close to them are being targeted in a Cheshire Police campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse.
Police say traditionally it is women who are associated with being victims of domestic abuse. But figures reveal that around a fifth of all victims of domestic abuse reported in Cheshire between April 2010 and December 2010 were men.
Domestic abuse can be defined as any threatening behaviour, violence or abuse – emotional, psychological, physical, sexual or financial.
As part of a police campaign both men and women are being urged to break their silence if they are being abused.
Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson (pictured) said: “Domestic abuse knows no boundaries and it can happen to anyone at any time regardless of gender, age and sexuality.
“Men in particular find it hard to speak out if they are being abused, but we want to reassure anyone who may be suffering at the hands of another, that domestic abuse is an issue that we take extremely seriously.”
Police have launched a Speak Out campaign, urging victims of abuse to come forward.
Information on the campaign is being circulated in the community including GP surgeries, community centres and shops. It includes details on how to contact the police and how to access support services.
Anyone who is a victim of domestic abuse, is worried that someone they know is a victim or is concerned about their own behaviour should contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000. Further information is also available by logging onto www.cheshire.police.uk
