WARRINGTON defied the national economic chill with overwhelming trading results during the festive season according to newly released figures.
Despite the freezing weather conditions, Golden Square Shopping Centre reported that thousands of shoppers braved the snow, driving up sales by 2.4 per cent on the previous year.
This compares with a national sales decline of 0.3 per cent reported by British Retail Consortium.
Figures show that Thursday December 23 was the busiest day since Golden Square first opened, with more than 74,000 people walking through its doors. Jewellery sales increased by 23 per cent compared with the previous year.
Marketing manager Ian Cox said: “Even though the region had a difficult period with the weather in mid December, sales were 2.4 per cent up on last Christmas, with the week before Christmas being particularly busy.”

  1. It was never particularly busy when I went in to do my xmas shopping (and I was in on 23 Dec too)

HOWEVER.. surely sales will have gone up due to the fact that there was a lot of uncertanty over ordering online and delayed deliveries. How do Warringtons figures compare with the Trafford Centre and the new shopping complex in Widnes ?

  2. Don’t ask for comparisons Dizzy, you won’t get them…..because they might destroy the impression of the ‘feel good factor’ that they are trying to create 🙂 You’ll know when Warrington is doing better when the boards come off the windows of the empty shops:)
