Deaf review welcomed by users

A REVIEW of the assessment for deaf people in Warrington has been welcomed by service users.
Last year the borough council started a review of services for people affected by hearing loss and their carers and families. A consultation asked for people’s views on the services they receive, and how future services should be delivered.
Results showed overwhelming support for the specialist assessment service for D/deaf people – those who use who use British Sign Language and see themselves as part of the deaf community – to be brought under the direct responsibility of the council.
In total 73 per cent of those responding supported this proposal and 11 per cent had no preference. So from April 1 the council will provide an in-house service.
Cllr Roy Smith, the council’s executive member for health and wellbeing, said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation, it is vitally important that we meet the needs of D/deaf residents.
“We are now considering the views on what we can do to further improve the service and begin work with service users who expressed an interest in being involved in its development.”
