New weather warning for town

THE NHS in Warrington is gearing up for the freezing temperatures to return again as the Met Office forecasts frequent and heavy snow showers and widespread icy surfaces.
Local people are being asked to prepare for the forthcoming drop in temperatures by keeping a close eye on the weather forecast and stocking up on medicines and essential items so they won’t have to go out if the severe conditions worsen.
Cold weather can have serious health consequences.
Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that last year, there was an estimated 25,400 winter deaths, mostly linked to circulatory and respiratory diseases.
NHS Warrington is also calling on the town’s residents to keep an eye out for older family members, friends and neighbours this weekend by volunteering to make necessary trips on their behalf to collect medicines and essential food items.
A spokesperson for NHS Warrington said: “Older and more vulnerable people must keep warm and stay indoors during severe weather. They are much more at risk from serious injury or illness. We are urging people to take action before this cold spell hits to ensure that they stay safe and well.”
Treacherous ice on Warrington’s pavements meant almost 100 people went to A&E with fractures on Thursday December 9 during the last cold spell.
People who must go out are urged to reduce the risk of severe bruising or broken and fractured bones by wearing sensible shoes or boots with a good grip on the soles.
There is also a special warning for people heading out to Christmas parties, due to cold temperatures continuing to drop even further overnight. They are advised to dress appropriately by wearing a coat and where possible, arrange transport home to avoid spending long periods of time waiting for taxis in the cold.
