Winter survival guide for elderly

A WINTER “survival guide” for older people in Warrington has been put together by health experts in the borough.
The Winter Warm Directory is a comprehensive guide to local services produced by NHS Warrington to ensure that patients have access to all of the information needed to help prevent them from falling ill as the temperatures drop.
The free guide features useful telephone numbers for vital services such as social alarm service 1Carecall and practical advice on how to heat the home effectively and saving energy in order to reduce fuel bills.
Heather Norman, health practitioner for health improvement said: “Last winter we saw some extremely cold temperatures. It’s vitally important that local people are fully prepared this year, particularly older and more vulnerable members of the community. We know they’re more likely to contract an infection or illness in colder weather and we are helping to minimise these risks by ensuring they have access to information that will keep them warm, well and safe this winter.
“We’ve also developed a useful ‘Be Prepared’ checklist which details top tips to help prepare your home and plan ahead for the coming winter months. The checklist advocates identifying a friend, relative or neighbour who can help collect prescriptions or essential supplies if the weather becomes treacherous, or when you’re feeling unwell”.
The PCT is also urging older people to contact their GP Practice to arrange their annual flu vaccination.
