MP backs shop workers' campaign

A WARRINGTON MP is backing a campaign aimed at preventing physical and verbal abuse of shop workers.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones is calling for more respect for retail staff. She cited an Usdaw survey which shows that more than a million workers were assaulted, threatened or verbally abused in the last 12 months.
The MP said: “Shop workers deserve respect and they have my full support. We must do more to help them do their job safely.
“I would like to see the Government challenge Lord Young’s recommendation that all shops should be automatically declared as safe workplaces. They need health and safety inspections from time to time to ensure that risks are minimised. The Government must continue to support the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities to inspect all workplaces.”
She is also concerned about the 20 per cent cuts in police budgets which she believe will mean there will be fewer police patrolling shopping areas, making it less safe for shop workers.
The union’s survey showed that in the past year, six per cent of shop workers were subjected to violent attack, 37 per cent were threatened with harm and 70 per cent suffered verbal abuse.
