Landlords urged to quit using clampers

A SENIOR councillor at Warrington has called on private landlords in Warrington to stop using clamping firms to enforce parking regulations on their land.
Coun Paul Campbell said: “I call on all landlords who use clamping companies to take a lead for the rest of the country and use other legal means of enforcing their parking, such as pay and display.”
He was speaking after the government’s announcement that it is to bring in new laws to stop clamping on private land.
Coun Campbell, an executive board member Warrington Borough Council and a member of Culcheth Parish Council, said he had campaigned on the issue for some time.
Many clamping companies used tactics bordering on threats and intimidation.
This would now have to stop, with both clampers and landlords in danger of prosecution and large fines if they persisted.
“The people who use the shops and restaurants in Culcheth will be only too pleased that they will be able to use the car parks on Lodge Drive without fear of finding their car clamped or towed away,” he added.
There has been a long-running controversy in Culcheth over shoppers being clamped and then being forced to pay large fines to have the clamps removed.
Shopkeepers were opposed to the clamping because they believed it was driving shoppers away from the village.

  1. This is long over due as readers Warrington Worldwide will remember when my wife wrote to your magazine about being CLAMPED late at night in Culcheth a couple of years ago.

The councillors did nothing and stated as much in their response. It is good that at last they have finally had a change of heart after all this time!!!!

We still go back to the restaurants because they didn’t take the clampers side. Although we hadn’t been eating at Don Luigi the Raj told us that he might have some influence. He did and Don Luigi negotiated her release with a couple of Pizzas and a drink.

When she goes back she always gets a warm welcome and last time the words on everyone’s lips were NO MORE CLAMPING IN CULTCHETH.

Thanks goodness for common sense on Common Lane.
