Litter pickers wanted

A WARRINGTON conservation group is looking for volunteers to help with a proposed litter pick on a local shoreline!
Warrington Nature Conservation Forum (WNCF) are organising a litter pick around the lake off Delph Lane, Houghton Green, provisionally for Saturday morning October 9.
Group member and borough councillor Geoff Settle said: “With the dry summer and extraction of water from the near by borehole by United Utilities a sandy shoreline has appeared and some people have been treating it as a beach with barbecues!!
“Our aim is to clear up the litter with the help of the borough council who have agreed to provide litterbags and pickers.”
He said local residents and members of Winwick WI had also expressed support.
“The area is an excellent wildlife SINC site and it is an utterly shameful that people are discarding cans as well as stealing logs to build fires along the shoreline,” he added.
Anyone who wants to know more details should contact Geoff Settle 01925810306.
Meanwhile Members of the WNCF were treated to a talk from Ben Lukey of the Environmental Agency at their autumn meeting.
He described the proposals for managing flood risk in Warrington and answered many interesting questions.
Ben’s talk was very relevant to other topics on the agenda for example the recent Water Vole Habitat Survey in Sankey Valley, proposed extension of Arpley Landfill, flooding at Spittle Brook and the walls necessary to protect houses on the other side of Knutsford road opposite Victoria Park.
The construction of the defensive walls will have a direct impact on the trees in the park that provide a vital corridor for the local bat population along the road.
At the meeting Brian Martin, (pictured top) who retired as Chairman last year, was presented with a watercolour painting of a tern as a reminder of his two very successful years leading the forum.
He may have retired as Chair but he is still very active and playing a leading role at Woolston Eyes protecting and conserving the area especially the bird population.
