Volunteers needed

WARRINGTON Borough council is urging local people to put themselves forward to be volunteers at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
As well as needing volunteers for the Games, many willing hands are needed in the lead up as well – from meeters and greeters, ticket checkers, ushers and medical staff to caterers and drivers. A huge number of people with a huge range of skills are required to make these games a success.
Warrington Council is now on the 2012 North West steering group and involved in the planning of the regional elements of the event. Football matches for example will be held in Manchester as well as Newcastle.
Cllr Keith Bland, deputy leader of the council, said: “Tens of thousands of volunteers are needed to help deliver the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it would be wonderful if some them were from Warrington. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
The role of volunteers has been integral throughout Olympic history. London pioneered the use of them in the 1948 Games which saw the first official use of unpaid members of the public to help with operations.
To apply for one of the 70 000 roles available visit www.london2012.com/volunteering
The closing date is Wednesday October 27.

  1. London and the SE-centric government refused to support or back the Manchester bids for the Olympics in ’96 and 2000, claiming there was no demand for it and no money to pay for it. So Manchester went on to stage and staff a very succesful Commonwealth Games in 2002 with little or no help from the Southerners. Let them now find volunteers from within the communities which will benefit from the vast investments in the capital which the government has suddenly “found” the money for.
