Waste recycling plant rejected

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build a waste recycling plant in Warrington was turned down by planners.
It was the second time the bid had been to the borough council’s planning sub committee.
Members previously decided to visit the site off Folly Lane, Warrington after hearing of strong objections from nearby residents -before making a decision.
The site is the former George Howard scrapyard which for years caused problems for residents with noise, vermin, dust, smells and traffic.
It already has permission to receive up to 75,000 tonnes of waste a year. The new application was by Howard’s Environmental Services Ltd who said they expected it to handle about 25,000 tonnes per year, including about three heavy lorry deliveries per hour.
Worried residents feared the problems associated with the site in the past would resume.
The committee was told a building for the deposit, sorting, recycling and transfer of non-hazardous waste was dismantled by the previous operators and stored on the site.
The new operators proposed to re-erect the building on the same site, using the original materials.
