MP calls for re-think on bed sit rules

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is calling upon the Government to re-think its decision to scrap new rules brought in by Labour that protected communities from the spread of bed sits and properties of multiple occupation.
She said: “The Coalition’s decision to scrap the new rules which protected communities from bed-sits springing up too easily is very disappointing. I am worried for areas of Warrington that already have large numbers of bed-sits and as a result of the Government’s decision they may see more.”
“These properties when not properly managed or planned for, can lead to a change in the balance and nature of local communities. Short-let properties are often rented by residents with little stake in the local area and many areas see the closure of shops, businesses and local amenities following an increase in the number of Houses of Multiple Occupency.”(HMOs)
“Before the election, the tough new rules that Labour introduced meant that new Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) had to have planning permission if three or more people who are not related lived together, down from six previously. This legislation gave councils the power to prevent the creation of new HMOs under planning laws and
reign in the problems associated with absentee landlords.”
The Government has also announced it will be scrapping the National Register for Landlords which would have allowed tenants and Councils to make basic checks on prospective landlords.

  1. ……….but what about the properties such as the detatched house in Callands that was home to about 20 Polish migrant workers? Would that still fall under the scheme?
