Child safety seat campaign in town

A national safety campaign to highlight the dangers and show parents how to properly install child car seats arrives in Warrington today (Saturday Sept 18).
The borough council’s road safety team is arranging two free child car seat checking clinics on Saturday 18 September at Birchwood Shopping Centre from 10am until 4pm and Friday October 29 at Tesco again from 10am until 4pm.
Supporting the team on the day will be the local representatives from the local fire and police services. Staff working on the day are fully trained and insured to carry out the service.
The rise of internet and catalogue shopping is apparently contributing to this issue as people are increasingly ordering car seats by these means and losing out on the standard fitting and checking service offered by retailers.
Cllr Alan Litton, (pictured right) executive board member for environment and transport said: “The statistics are worrying because they show that many car seats being used by parents are not as safe as perhaps thought which is why we are backing this campaign and why we would urge parents to take advantage of these free car seat clinics.
“These checks will only take a few moments and they could save your child from very serious injury.”
The events will also tie in with the national campaign which is being launched in England after proving successful in Scotland, ‘The Good Egg Guide’ provides information on how to fit a child seat, choosing the right seat, the law and your responsibilities.
It also offers practical advice and highlights areas where improvements could be made to in-car child safety and to help reduce the number of child passenger casualties.
