Battle to stop tip extension plan

RESIDENTS and councillors from opposing political parties are fighting a bid to extend the life of Warrington’s Arpley landfill site.
The Waste Recycling Group want to extend the life of the Arpley Landfill Site for a further 12 Years from 2013.
Lib Dem and Labour councillors joined forces at the “Arpley Landfill Liaison Group” to support residents in strongly opposing the proposals which include continuing to import waste into the site by road from outside Warrington with no changes to days and hours of operation.
Members across the political divide were united in their opposition.
When the Waste Recycling Group were asked if they had considered bringing in waste by rail or canal from outside the borough, they said it was not a commercially viable option.
They said they proposed to consult but gave no indication that they would be influenced by what they heard.
Councillor Alan Litton (pictured right) (Liberal Democrat) Chair of the Liaison Group said: “Residents in and around Sankey Bridges have suffered for over 20 years from heavy waste wagons trundling past their homes all day long with the resultant noise, vibration, dirt, and smells and desperately want to see an end to it.
“I and my fellow Councillors will oppose this proposal vigorously.”
