REMINDERS are being sent out to about 40 per cent of Warrington people who have not yet returned their registration forms for the Electoral Register.
At the end of July forms were sent to all households to officially register voters and those who will soon turn 18.
The Electoral Register is updated each year, following the annual canvass from September to November, and the new one is due to be published on December 1.
Electoral services manager Alison Hughes said: “You must, by law, return the form each year, whether you use your vote or not is your choice. If you do not respond to the annual canvass request or provide false information on the form, you may be liable to a fine of up to £1000.
“Around 40 per cent of households have not yet returned their forms to us; being on the council tax register does not automatically mean that you are on the electoral role. Reminder forms are being issued to all non responding households.”
The register is used by many organisations to confirm an individual’s address, for example if applying for a mortgage, credit card, personal loan or even a mobile phone.
People need to be included is they are over 18, British, Irish, European or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, aged between 16 and 17 (so that they are eligible to vote at 18).
Reminders should be returned to avoid one of the council’s canvassers visiting the property next month.
Anyone with no changes to details can register by using the 24 hour freephone service 0800 197 5778 or text 80212, or register online at www.registerbyinternet.com/warrington
Both the phone and internet systems allow users to add or remove their names from the edited version of the register (used by mailing companies) and to request postal vote applications.
