New restaurant planned

A NEW restaurant will open in a busy village centre if Warrington planners give the go-ahead.
But there is opposition to the plan in Lodge Drive, Culcheth because of the likelihood of chronic parking problems and the loss of a retail unit.
The shop was until recently a wine store.
Main objections come from local husband-and-wife councillors Keith and Sue Bland.
They say there is already an over-provision of eating establishments in Culcheth and that the change of use of this property will result in the loss of another retail shop.
In addition, there are serious parking issues.
Other objectors also claim there are too many eating outlets in the village.
But planning officers are recommending the scheme go ahead. They say there 54 per cent of all units in the village centre will still be retail and the new restaurant will enhance the overall vitality of the shopping centre,

  1. 54% retail units being 50% Sainsburys and 4% independents. The local councillors would do better to support the local shops by stopping the march of the big chains- I don’t remember them objecting to the recent increase in Sainsburys opening hours which was one area that a local business could previously compete on.

There are too many eating places but I’m not too concerned about that as the best will survive and the others go out of business. That is fair competition, Sainsbury’s is not.

  2. There are too many eating places but most of them are Indian, there is a niche for an English one of this type which will give McDs some competition. I think the Blands are speaking for themselves rather than the residents.

Sainsbury’s are helping the retail outlets in the CPS building by attracting custom.

  3. Well maybe if there wasnt this culture of double yellow lining every street where small business exists there wouldnt be a parking problem. There seems to be an secret agenda to decimate the small business in this (a nation of shopkeepers) in favour of the megastores. The evil behind this plan always use parking as an excuse to keep us (the little man) down and unable to make our own way other than working for the bigman. Ban parking outside the small shops allowing megastores to capture the market because you park right outside their stores. can you think of a single shopping street which used to thrive in the 70s which isnt now a wasteland thanks to double yellow lines and supermarkets. a sad demise.
