A NUMBER of local councillors have pledged backing for a bid by the local community to take over Lymm Youth and Community Centre.
Members of Lymm Youth and Community Association are bidding for a Community Asset Transfer – a scheme under which a facility can be transferred from a local authority to a local community for independent management.
The community association has been fighting for some time to secure the long term future of the premises in the village centre.
The association has secured support from the Asset Transfer Unit which will take the form of five days free consultancy designed to offer guidance through the Community Asset Transfer process.
The fight to save the centre has also come to the attention of the Government, with Lord Nat Wei, David Cameron’s special advisor on the Big Society taking a personal interest.
On hearing about this national support, Coun Sheila Woodyatt, the borough council’s executive member for Children and Young People. Said: “I am delighted to hear it and do hope the project meets the criteria.”
Coun Bob Barr, executive member for planning added: “This is very encouraging news as it will enable the youth club to resolve outstanding issues, once and for all, and to establish the terms for a Community Asset Transfer. I welcome both.”
Association chairman Steve Griffiths said: “This is indeed
excellent news. The centre is buzzing with vibrancy and there is a great deal of excitement at the prospect of becoming a focus for community activity
in Lymm and South Warrington as part of the Big Society agenda.”
