A 60-year-old lorry driver arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been interviewed and freed on police bail.
Two men – believed to have been standing on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway – were killed in the crash.
At first police were unable to identify them, but one was a 69-year-old man from St Helens and the other a 39-year-old from Ashton-in-Makerfield. Their families have been informed.
The motorway did not re-open fully until around 9.45pm last night.
