Have-a-go hero's amazing escape

A WARRINGTON man threw himself on the bonnet of a car in a bid to stop two burglars getting away with valuables from his house.
As the car driver braked heavily and swerved in an attempt to throw him from the bonnet he repeatedly punched the windscreen until it shattered.
Eventually he was thrown from the speeding car but, amazingly, escaped serious injury.
The incident happened at 5.15pm on Tuesday last week (August 10) but police only released details last night.
The drama started when the householder arrived at his home on Radley Lane, Houghton Green to find a car on the drive, laden with valuables from his ransacked house. Two men were still in the act of loading the car in broad daylight.
Already in the car were expensive audio visual equipment, a flatscreen television and even a case of champagne.
The two men confronted the victim and one punched him in the face. He is described as being of average build and in his late twenties. He was dressed in a yellow t-shirt with dark brown “floppy” hair. The other offender threw a large, black holdall at the householder. He was tanned, about six feet tall and of stocky or muscular build. He had closely shaved hair and a rounded face, and was dressed in a green/grey t-shirt with dark coloured trousers. He spoke with a local accent.
Both men jumped into the car, grey and similar in size and shape to a Focus or Golf. In an attempt to intervene, the victim jumped onto the bonnet. The man in the yellow t-shirt, who was driving, slammed on the brakes, trying to cause the victim to fall and he was eventually thrown off – after shattering the windscreen.
The car drove off in the direction of Mill Lane.
DC Alex Reeves, investigating the incident, said “This incident took place in a quiet residential area at a time when lots of people are travelling home from work. We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a gun metal grey coloured Golf or Ford Focus with a shattered windscreen being driven at speed in the area.
“Thankfully, the victim received only cuts and bruises, but there was definite potential for him to have received serious injuries. Particularly upsetting is that the thieves stole sentimental items and gifts from house owner’s recent wedding.
“I ask that anyone with any information contact Warrington CID on 0845 458 0000 or alternatively information may be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111”
