Warning on bogus charity collections

TRADING Standards chiefs are warning residents about bogus charity collection bags that have been delivered to homes across the borough.
Household collections are a popular way for charities to collect donations, but residents are being advised to read the small print and know where their donation is going.
Coun Mike Biggin (pictured), the council’s executive member for climate change and public protection, said: “Collection bags are a popular way for legitimate charities to raise money. Unfortunately there are those who will take advantage of people’s generosity for their own gain. I would urge anyone who is suspicious to get in touch and help us stamp this practice out.”
Anyone with any doubts about the organisation asking for donations can call the Charity Commission helpline on 0845 300 0218 or visit www.charitycommission.gov.uk or simply donate unwanted clothing to a known, genuine charity.
