THE wife of former Wolves’ coach Paul Cullen has died after a long battle with cancer.
Christine Cullen, aged 48, died peacefully at home with her family yesterday (Tuesday)Widnes Vikings, where Cullen is now coach, will hold a minute’s silence before their game with Sheffield tomorrow.
Cullen has been on compassionate leave for more than a month and has now been granted leave for the rest of the season.
A statement from the Vikings said: “The club sends its prayers and heart felt condolences to Paul, their sons Josh and Scott and family and friends.
“A one minute silence will be observed at the game against Sheffield at home on Thursday evening.”
Paul Cullen (pictured) joined Warrington in 1980 and had a successful, 17-year playing career with the club, moving into coaching in 1996. In 2000 he became head coach at Whitehaven but returned to Warrington as head coach in 2002. When he resigned, after the Wolves’ had endured a run of bad form, in 2008, he was the longest-serving coach in Superleague.
Cullen also had a spell in charge of the England side.
He joined Widnes in March 2009.
His wife was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
