Community centre to be demolished

A ONCE popular community centre at Warrington is to be demolished because it is no longer considered fit for purpose.
Work will start this week on the demolition of the disused Wroxham Road Community Centre at Great Sankey. It is expected the work will last four weeks.
The site will be incorporated in the nearby park.
Several years ago the borough council completed a review of the centre following a marked reduction in the levels of use.
At the same time talks with users and local parish councillors took place and it was agreed to close the centre.
Groups were assisted to relocate to alternative and more suitable facilities. The centre was already in a poor state of repair.
Increased access to nearby primary school halls and improved facilities at other centres in the area contributed to the decision.
Coun Liz Smith, (pictured) the borough council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and communities said: “Recent attempts to re-let the building for alternative uses have been unsuccessful.
“As the building has been targeted by vandals, the centre is no longer fit for purpose and the community is well served by other nearby facilities, we feel sure this is the right decision.”
