Fire crews in six hour battle

FIRE crews fought a six hour battle to control a blaze at the giant Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station near Warrington.
Five fire appliance, plus an aerial appliance, were used in the operation.
The blaze involved a conveyor belt used for carrying coal dust – and the coal dust itself was on fire, making the operation more difficult.
Crews had to strip down conveyors to get to the root of the problem.
The blaze was reported just before 3.30pm yesterday (Sunday) and crews were at the scene until 9.30pm last night.
Since they, firefighters have returned to the site every three hours to check on the situation.
In a separate incident, fire crews were called to a flooding incident at a block of flats in Museum Street, Warrington.
They isolated the electrics, pumped away flood water and cut off the water supply.
