How to keep active – without falling!

PHYSIOTHERAPISTS have been showing patients in Warrington how to keep active during National Falls Awareness Week.
Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust physiotherapists focussed on the week’s theme – the importance of physical activity, particularly for older people to maintain their independence.
They promoted the importance of staying active by carrying out chair-based exercise classes with their patients.
Figures show that as people get older the risk factors associated with falls increase. Last year, more than 1,000 people over the age of 65 from across Warrington and Halton attended hospital with a hip or wrist fracture, possibly caused as a result of a fall.
Therapy manager Carol Millington said: “As we age our muscle strength naturally declines, which increases our risk of falls. Physical inactivity can make this much worse, so it’s important not to be tempted to slow down as we grow older.
“It is never too late to benefit from physical activity; strength and balance hold the keys to independent living. Without them, we would be unable to do everyday activities like getting up from a chair and going walking. Quite simply, good strength and balance gives us the ability to Get Up and Go!”
