Council reminder on bus cuts

WARRINGTON Borough Council has issued a reminder about the reduced Sunday bus service timetable which comes into force this weekend.
Services will continue to run during usual shopping hours, but there will a reduction in evening services.
A timetable can be downloaded from the Warrington Borough Transport website at www.warringtonboroughtransport.co.uk or details can be obtained from their customer care line on 01925 634296.
Andy Farrall, the borough council’s director for environment and regeneration, said: “We are in challenging times and any decisions about Sunday bus services have not been taken lightly. Various options and alternatives have been considered. Minimising any impact on our residents always guides our thinking and decision making.
“By working in partnership with Warrington Borough Transport we have been able to keep any disruption to residents to a minimum and continue to provide bus services which will largely remain the same during usual shopping hours.”
Coun Alan Litton, (pictured) the council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “It is very unfortunate, but the current financial situation means that we, like so many councils up and down the country, are facing tough decisions about how and which services we can continue to fund.
“We are in a position where we can’t resource everything and so we have to make decisions based on providing those services that will have a positive impact on the highest number of people possible.
“However, I would like to reassure residents that we will leave no stone unturned and are looking at all viable alternatives to support the new services and we will continue to do this and monitor the impact on residents.”
Charlie Shannon, director of Warrington Borough Transport, said: “As a result of our close working relationship with the council, we have been able to retain Sunday bus services during shopping hours and hope this benefits local bus users.”

  1. Again with the weasel words – unless you live in Penketh or Burtonwood, basically there won’t be any bus service after 6pm. That isn’t just a reduction – it’s complete withdrawal for the majority of the borough. Some areas will go from a half-hourly service to nothing at all – so much for socially necessary.

  2. Can someone from this band of thieves called a Council, please explain why they are short of money all of a sudden? The council tax take in this town must have risen significantly in the past few years as the number of housing estates have grown. You only need so many bin wagons to do a round so where does all this extra money go? It certainly doesn’t go on road repairs…… although maybe a lot has been wasted on traffic lights I guess….. In the same period, my council tax has gone up, bus fares have risen to the point where it is cheaper to hire a Bentley to take a family of 4 into town than it is to get the bus……. Of course councillors allowances have risen I suppose? Bloody thieves the lot of ’em

  3. At last weeks executive board meeting they were saying that they had saved loads of money and their balance sheet was looking rather good now.

Anyway as for sunday bus services….. have the council considered teenagers who need to get around whether that is to watch a film in the only cinema Warrington has up at Westbrook (Just under £10 one way to Stockton Heath in a taxi by the way) or if they are like my son and all his mates they go to every Wolves Rugby Match (home and away)….. this sundays home match is a 5.45pm kickoff so yes they can all get still get there by bus but will all either have to walk back or rely on parents to pick them all up ! There will be a lot more cars on the roads after 5pm on Sundays now I guess as Warrington town centre is not the place for teens to be walking home through early evening !! Anyway not to worry eh 🙂

  4. I thought that the proposed Youth Centre in town was going to be open 7 days a week? Perhaps on the Sabbath, they have to run the gauntlet to get home.

  5. We should not be too harsh on Mizz Terris, our dear CEO only had total remuneration of £150,836 in 2008/2009, an increase of £10000 on the previous year. She is only assisted by four strategic directors who have to scrape by on £100,000+ per year and a coroner on a similar sum who I presume is retained to confirm the death of the borough when it occurs.

Having a bus service or operational bus shelters is small beer when compared the the urgent need for recruits as follows

    Non-job of the week

It’s Wednesday again and time for our weekly non-job, and this week the public sector are advertising for 359 positions on the Guardian jobs website. There are some 84 roles listed within the salary band £40,000-£50,000, and that’s where we found this week’s nomination, a vacancy posted by Warrington Borough Council.

    “Climate Change Manager

    £40,741 – £43,408

Help us achieve a climate of real change.

When it comes to climate change, many organisations promise considerably more than they deliver. At Nj5 Warrington Borough Council, we prefer to let our actions do the talking instead. Join us in this vital role and you’ll be working in a newly formed Transportation and Climate Change Service, which was recently accredited with Green Flag Status from the CAA – an accolade which says rather more about our commitment to tackling environmental issues than any amount of empty rhetoric could.

Responsible for ensuring that we meet both our national and regional responsibilities in relation to climate change, you will play a lead role in the development and implementation of our Climate Change Strategy and associated action plans. As well as motivating, developing and managing members of your own team, you will also act as Programme Manager for our Climate Change Programme Board, ensuring that key partners both within and outside the Council work together to achieve our objectives.

This is a hands-on management role that demands considerable experience of negotiating and corresponding with high profile people, including Council Members and MPs. Possibly coming to us from a similar role in another local authority, or from a sustainable travel, project management or even communications background, you must be comfortable in a role that requires a lot of strategic thought and be able to confidently prepare bids for external funding”.
