TWO men caught with illegal drugs near Warrington have been given lengthy prison sentences.
Matthew Barnes, 27, was jailed for six years and Terence Burrows, 32, was jailed for four and-a-half years at Chester Crown Court.
Both were from the Stockton area and had pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply – a kilo of cocaine with an estimated street value of about £400,000.
Barnes also pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and charges of escape and battery.
The court heard a Skoda taxi, driven by Burrows, was stopped by police on the M62 near Burtonwood. His passenger was Barnes.
When challenged, Barnes assaulted a police officer and fled the scene while Burrows was detained and arrested.
Officers discovered a kilo of cocaine and a quantity of cannabis ion the car.
Barnes was later tracked down by detectives and both men were charged and remanded in custody.
The Judge granted a confiscation order against Barnes, stating that he had benefited to the tune of £2,000 and ordered him to pay £1,389 – being the amount of his current available assets.
Detective Sergeant Ian Allen, of Cheshire Police, said: “This was a significant arrest of two men who believed they could bring a large quantity of Class A drugs into Cheshire and get away with it.”
