Hidden cost of disposable wipes

1

A WARNING has gone out to householders in Warrington that if they flush disposable wipes down the toilet they could end up having to pay for clearing blocked drains.
Facial, baby or household wipes are not suitable for flushing through toilets, can block drains and can cause flooding.
Contrary to popular belief, they do not easily break down, says the borough council.
Disposable wipes are now found in more than two thirds of blocked, shared drains.
Many of these drains are private and it is the responsibility of the householder to keep them clear.
Sometimes, it is difficult to identify where the wipes of come from so the cost of unblocking the drain is shared between a number of householders.
“Understandably many people are unhappy to pay towards works due to the actions of others,” a council spokeswoman said.
Disposable wipes should be binned – not flushed down the toilet.
Further information and advice about disposing of wipes can be obtained from the United Utilities website, www.unitedutilities.com or from the council’s environmental health team.

  1. We all agree this is terrible…but we also all agree that we are being conned by the water authorities whose responsiblity it SHOULD be rather than use it as another cash cow from their customers. Electricity board dont come and charge us when somone vandalises a substation, Gas board dont charge us when theres a leak outside our premesis. Phone company dont charge us if a telegraph gets broke…yet the water company who dont only charge us for delivering water, but charge us an equal amount for taking it away (despite us drinking and using some of it) charge a community for something that might be 200 yards down the street…CON !
